Pipe vice with chain ?

Has anyone ever made one of those pipe welding vices. The ones that appear to have a length or two of motorbike chain on them to hold on to the pipe ?

I ask because I would like to own one they look very handy, and I honestly not sure how to go about it. Never having seen one in actual real life useage.

Any, tips, hints, clues, pictures, detailed blueprints ?

MK's right cheap as chips, unless you have time and parts kicking about not worth making, you could probably pick one up complete with stand as well

if I remember correctly, the chain is not a standard type but has extra long pins that project beyond the links so as to hook the chain at the attachment point.
As said, not really worth making?

Got a 1950s "engineering hints and tips" type book which details making an adaptor to convert a standard engineering vice to a chain clamp.
Basically involves a pair of pins, one on each jaw, just thin enough to thread into the gap between the links.

As the vice is closed, it pulls the chain tight around the item to be gripped.

What about those vice grip pliers (forgot the trade name) which have a chain affixed to them. So you can clamp it around a pipe. Anyone know where i can get some at a decent price ? (ie: Not a new Irwin pair at over £100 each!!!)

Zardos I use them often at work, the old chain type - not the "vice grip" - and I find it very useful and handy.
