You're quite right...I've jumped the gun . I was reading somewhere that just 1 inch of weld can support 1 tonne of weight...doesn't surprise me as just a single spot weld is pretty strong on it's own.

I use the round section from screwdrivers, cut down.

I can still see a mate of mine with a cross from a phillips screwdriver on his forehead. He was using it in an axle stand and swung round a bit quick under the car and it nipped him. I don't think the fact another mate had just stuck the tube from the WD40 down the back of his pants helped

Thanks for all of the replies. Very interesting about the shearing of bolts. Think I've got some that will be long enough with the threaded portion cut off. The top of the support section will be a disc about 5" in diameter so even with a 2" hole through the centre there should be plenty of 'meat' to bear on. the pins will be on chains to prevent loss so hopefully I will never have to resort to bent screwdrivers etc. Will start a build thread when I've got a few hours to get the welding done.
