Pillar Drill Vice

Hi folks,

Anyone ever used a bench vice on a drill? I've an old No. 34p which has a huge opening (4"wide 8+" opening!) and a newish No.3 sat doing nothing as I haven't the bench space for them, am I being daft wanting to use one on my drill table, the tables big enough and strong enough to hold it (I can barely lift the sodding table!)

no reason why not if u have the height and can wind the vice handle round as it will catch the table when loosening or tightening it . lol would love to see u lifting table when its clamped on on

Ah i can cheat there, that's what the 20+kilo counterweight and cable are for...!

Yeah i reckon there's room for the handle, as for height you can get probably a 100cm work-piece between the table at its lowest and chuck at its highest as there's LOADS of adjustment on both!

I have a Clarke drill vice but it's ***** at best as there is so much play on the jaw that moves it's unreal! I'm usually only drilling small bits of flat bar etc.

Yep I use a Record number 3 on my Meddings mainly because I haven't yet put my backside in gear and tracked down a decent drill vice. Although it works and is a lot safer than hand holding things it's less than ideal - the bottom of the vice is not machined dead flat and rocks just a bit on the drill table also can be a bit wide and hang off the edge of the table - further adding to the slight wobble. Also not so easy to ensure pieces are horizontal to the table / perpendicular to the drill bit. Brightspark is also right about trying to rise the table with the vice on it's a PITA. That said it will work if you haven't yet got a drill vice.

Nope for the bulk of what I do at the moment precision and accuracy isn't needed but with the drill capable of much more and with future projects in mind that will need some degree of accuracy and precision I will be getting a t-slot clamping kit and decent drill vice as and when it's needed. Trouble is finding a drill vice that matches the quality of the drill that either isn't the other side of the country or priced as if it was made of solid gold - one day I'll find one and the use of a Record no.3 can be resigned to the list of crazy make-do things I've done over the years.
