Pillar drill stalling

Hi all. Hoping someone can assist. I have an old Clarke Metalworker pillar drill that has developed a fault. It has little torque and the chuck can be stopped by hand. The motor itself stops, theres no slip on the pulleys or shalfs. Ive replaced the start capacitor as it also struggles to spin up and sometimes need a spin of the chuck by hand to fire up, but the issue remains. Im suspecting the motor itself is at fault now, perhaps a winding breaking up ? Not sure where to source a replacement motor if it is that. I would prefer to fix as its sentimental to me.

With the motor switched off, can the chuck be turned easily by hand? If not, check the motor and chuck bearings. If it all turns relatively freely, run the motor under no load conditions. If it gets hot after a few minutes, then the windings or start capacitor are suspect. Check that the start capacitor connections are good into the motor.

Thanks for your reply. I believe the chuck is easily enough to turn by hand, so ill check the motor itself, with the capacitor connections and do the run test. i do recall the problem becoming apparent after trying to drill 20mm aluminium with a hole saw....

So running the motor under no load for 5 mins resulted in no excessive heat or anything, then with the belt back on, it now seems fine ??? I think the belt might of been too tight perhaps, because now i cant stop it with my hand. Odd, but seems ok now.

Check also the cables for damage. If it has got damaged the wires inside could be partially severed so its trying to run on a couple of remaining strands. The motor will likely run ok on its own but once the drill is under load the cable will not be able to supply enough amps.
