I realize this discussion is getting into more than just this speed reducer... but-

You can run a 1 inch drill in an MT2 chuck. I've personally done it. It works fine. You can also run 100mm hole saws. I have customers running 150mm hole saws in thin stainless sheet.

sounds interesting but use the smallest pulley on the final chuck shaft ??surely the largest ?to slow it and more surface aeria on the pulley to stop slip

That was slightly ambiguous. I meant the small pulley on the motor set to,the large one the chuck shaft

I'm in the process of restoring and modifying a 1977 meddings LF1 pillar drill. The standard drill has a 2 pulley setup with speeds from 500 to 4000 rpm. I'm fitting a 220mm pulley to the spindle and moving the original spindle pulley to a fabricated pivoting shaft in a 3 pulley setup similar to the 16 speed Sealey in post no 28. This will give me a range of speeds from 100 to 2400 rpm. If it all works out I'll do a full write-up when I'm finished.

Unfortunately the project is on hold due to the local so-called 'precision engineers' cocking up a simple machining job TWICE! On the lookout now for a lathe so I can do my own machining work (see post in wanted section)

Since I started the project I found an old Kerry Super 8 MK1 bench drill with a back gear, with speeds down to 85rpm. Really heavy but beautifully engineered piece of kit but in need of a lot of restoration. Did discover that it has the same size column as the meddings so I can fit it to the meddings base giving me a Kerry pillar drill!
