pillar drill slipping

my old pillar drill has been getting worse,thought it was the drive belt too slack but adjusted it today...no better. as soon as you apply any reasonable effort to drill a hole the chuck stops turning making drilling very slow and tedious! the belt pulleys seem tight on the shafts so i,m thinking the quill or chuck?.. i,ve never stripped one before, is there a keyway or grub screw to transmit the drive or is it a taper fit?it is badged walker turner dont know model but must be quite old..see pic ..any idea.s /tips?

Most bench/floor drills have a taper fit quill,put a bundled rag(stop it getting damaged on the drop) under the quill and put an openended spanner between the quill and its mount and wack it down with a hide.rubber faced mallet.

Hello Shaky,

the cause is most likely to be the vee belt drive, if the belts slip even when tight, I would replace them. There is not anything else I can think of that will drive but slip with load?

belt is driving pulley ok.... no slip there,it,s the chuck or quill thats the prob i think ..will try and strip later...

Judging by the rust I think you will need to change the bearing also,certainly needs a derust process.

Yeah but will you get it to the condition he has got his to,excellant job he's done there,the end result shows that.

My Fobco Star has a groove machined along the quill; the bore of the pulleys has a matching 'peg' that engages with the groove so that as you bring the quill down it maintains drive.
I have noticed that the peg is wearing away and the groove has areas of damage that (I presume) correspond to times when the drill dug in and the peg impacted the groove.
Looks to me as though the time will come when the remains of the peg will shear off and there'll be no drive... maybe yours uses a similar principle.

i would think there would be some positive means of drive or else if it slipped on it.s taper it would just fall out!

The fact the drill is slowing down is not associated with slipping,it seems to me the motor or bearings are at fault not the drivebelt or pully.

this is a very old pillar drill and the motor has probably had some abuse in the use of the drill?

it will take your arm off at the motor pulley...no shortage of torque there!....

well i finally found the time to strip the pulley/quill/spindle assy and degreased it for a look see...actually v good cond, plenty grease, no nasty metal fragments look,s fine...shoved all the bit,s together on the bench can,t see what the problem would be...anyway decided to put it all back together again...and it,s fine! quiet, smooth,and powerfull with no slip!...v strange...!
