Pillar drill motor help.

So I managed to buy myself a Meddings/Boxford Union PD4 pillar drill for peanuts, it's in a ridiculously good condition apart from the bed plate as it came from a school.

Now the motor is duel voltage with star and delta symbols on the the plate but is that dual 3 phase voltages or is it single phase 220 and three phase 440?

If it is three phase only then I would prefer an inverter as the drill has never been apart, the paint on the motor and the drill has never seen a tool so I really don't want to make it none standard.

What kind of inverter do I need if I need one.

^^ Wire as delta to run off 220v 3 phase, star to run off 415v. An inverter with a transformer in to give 415 is much more expensive than one without.

yes, you can wire that in delta for 240v 3 phase :-)

Have had a go at wiring and configuring a couple of variable frequency drives and looking at the destruction manuals that come with them it can.appear a little daunting but once you get your head around what needs doing it actually quite straightforward

Just be aware you need to match the vfd to the motor capacity. The 3 that I setup, each manual specifically stated that the motor must be at least 50% of the rated capacity of the inverter to avoid potential issues

3 phase only, as said above. A little 3 phase 240 v inverter will run that no problem, there's usually a wiring diagram on the inside of the connection box lid, if not there will be info online about changing the connections to delta for 240 v operation if it's not already.

So am I correct in thinking because the motor is 0.5hp which is 0.37kw that a small 1.5kw inverter would be more than fine with the job. Also will I lose any power/torque by rewiring to 240v 3ph from 415v 3ph?

As per above post, if your motor is 0.37Kw then your inverter needs to be 0.75Kw max

This is based on what the various manuals have stated, inverter should be no more than 2x motor capacity

Not always true, as long as you can set the minimum current to the rated motor current you will be fine - I have a 1.5 kw inverter that goes down to 1.8 amps minimum (schneider altivar)so I'd have no problem fitting that (2.1 amps rated motor current on delta from the pic). Definitely check first though, and also note that you'll get a smaller inverter cheaper so no point forking out more money for something you don't need.

They should work fine, really for a practical application you want the current limit to protect the motor so need to ensure it's able to be set to the correct level.

When we do testing in work with drives (we use mainly Schneider but we have over the years used Siemens, weg, Lenze, hitachi etc) we just use a small 0.37 kw motor strapped to a bench and we've run all sorts of drives on it just fine, even up to 30 odd kw ones (the current limit can't be set correctly of course on the bigger ones but really we are only testing that the speed ramps up/down and the communications work for start/stopping etc, then when they go to site they obviously have the correct motor fitted).
