Pillar drill any good?

I am after a bench pillar drill.

is dis ting any good? drilling holes up to say 13mm in mild steel.
Says it is an 'Ajax five speed' single phase.

We used to have one - sold it to a member on here - very good machine - that ones in good nick - look, even a chuck guard!...and writing on the front just in case your not sure what it is

Looks like the junk Chinese one I paid $0.99 for (shipping was a bunch more though.)

Sloppy spindle, no taper and not much power.

Then again, maybe that's the one the Chinese copied

Chinese and totally lacking in durability and reliability.Only suitable for light use,have spent too much time repairing/mackling up etc the ones at work,regards,Mick.

Definately ****** and around £70 to £130 new dpendant upon brand name on it.
No power motor will easilly stop with a 1/4" drill plus the usual sloppy tolerances in quill etc, leave alone.
It will drill 13mm and would take an eternity, come to think of it drilling through 10mm then opening up to 13mm would take some doing, trust me leave alone ok for Fred in the shed tatting about.

Yep its a nasty Chinese thing chunko. Some do have reasonable motors on them, the chances of it being one of those is slim. I will say that Ajax supplied machines do tend to be a bit better than the run of the mill Chinese stuff. On the down side it does look as generic as all the other tat Chinese ones.

The bottom line is chunko, its horses for courses If you want to drill the odd hole once a week then it will probably do the job. Trying to drill 30 holes at say 1/2 inch i think you will be very, very frustrated and realise you have blown good money. Looking at what you do though, I will say i think something a bit more substantial would be a much greater benefit to you.

If it is the 125 quid stated by brightspark ............ forget it! way way overpriced more like 30 quids worth if that ,for what the Chinese stuff is.


My advice would be keep your cash and keep your eyes peeled for the right drill for you. Fobco, Kerry, meddings,Elliot or even a startright not brilliant but still 10 times the Chinese ones. One will turn up.

its advertised for sale at g and m tools .it must have came out of a school as it has pillar drill wrote on the front and red paint on the table to show where the center is learning all the time D I Y

Not all bad

I have a lovely Atlas pillar drill of US manufacture which runs as sweetly as a kiss. Its Crompton Parkinson motor hums like a cherished lover in my ear as it does its exquisite and precise work before my adoring eyes, not a squeak of protest or a thousandth of an inch deviation from its path....but...I strayed one day into a tool shop and I saw this Ajax drill abandoned almost, with a £120 tag on its neck. How could I leave it there. No heart of stone have I. Home it came and with a good clean up and lubrication it burst once more into life. I had only needed to overhaul the belt tightening mechanism, realign the motor and correct an annoying ratle from the belt case and all was well. The drill had belonged to a craftsman who had used it on a hobby basis only and mostly on wood from what I could tell. It has zero play in quill or spindle and the Ta Shin 1/2 Hp motor is strong. It has an ancient Cardinal 1/2" MT2 chuck and produces negligible run out. A reasonable spread of speeds is provided and the table rack and pinion is as smooth as can be in operation. There is a little coarseness in the transmission and hence objects do tend to move around a little on the table unless bolted down but I do not find this too objectionable. There is no provision for adjusting or locking the quill but so far I have not needed to do this and in any case I have the Atlas in reserve for delicate milling tasks.
A lot of these Taiwanese tools share the same basic castings but there are many differences in quality of fit and finish, choice of bearings and small but important features etc.. The many manufacturers and the many commissioning companies means that you should look at each individual machine on its own merits. This is not as easy as the simple brand loyalty approach that will work with European or American tools. So...in short I feel a bit reluctant to defend imported tools to this forum, that has much more experience than I have, but occasionally they can meet a need. Use your own judgement.
