Hi All
Has anybody got plans or pics of a spitroaster
I need to make one as the brother is moving into his house and his girlfriend asked me to do a pig on a spit
Any ideas welcome

I looked at making one then did the sensible thing and hired one £220 for a couple of days with good instructions about set up. it used propane and needed 1 hour per 10kg of pig as a guide line average pig about 40 to 50 kg. I did look at charcoal or open fire but it seems very difficult to get the right amount of heat over a long cooking time most sites suggested 8 hours plus over a pit. I am glad I hired the roaster pork was wonderful and no food poisoning!!!

My mate made one years ago it had two A end frames and a shaft with a fork either end of the shaft (a C shape with a hole in the centre) that was bolted in place when the pig was shafted(if you get my drift) this held the pig in place when the shaft was rotating.
The shaft then had a windscreen motor attached and rotated the pig running off a 12v battery which lasted long enough for the pig to be cooked over a hard wood fire. There was a one gallon tin of cider honey and mustard which had a 6" pasting brush in it which was used for basting the pig every now and again which has to be done or the pig will dry out it was well worth the effort at the end of the day. You will get good results with a gas fired unit but you will get more taste from a hard wood fire set-up. P.S. have you not thought about hot smoking the pig? try googling that.

Cameras were not invented then! sorry do not have a photo, best idea is to gather some parts and sure you will be able to visualise how to put it together. One thing to take note of is the ratio for the drive you do not want it spinning too fast but that can be sorted out with a bigger dia pully or sprocket however you decide to drive the spindle, or you could attach a handle and take it in turns revolving your pig.

At my neighbours annual Guy Fawkes alcholic BBQ and firework display , he used an old 1,000 gallon steel fuel oil tank , cut out & fitted top & bottom slide in from the top doors and a vari vent low down in the base + an 8 inch chimney hole in the top . main spit was 10 foot of 50 x50 angle with a special extender tube for putting it in & taking the roast pig out

He set it on some old 10 foot concrete fence posts , then basicaly at 08:30 lit a bonfire from ash and apple logs in it once the bed was 9 inches of glowing and burning logs he closed it up for a couple of hours and then at 13:00 I helped him getting the 80 lb pig on a 10 foot 50 x50 mm angle iron through the top door . the triangle made it easy to turn and fix position It got turned every 20 minutes and by 20:00 was golden crackling with slight charring of ears, & trotters .
We took it out wearing welding gloves, I ended up carving it for all 60 approx guests and stayed sober till the end .
No one got fod posioning so i guess it was correctly cooked .

The best thing about the spit roaster was that it pee'd it down for most of the early morning so being a fully contained fire box it didn't matter.
