Picked up my first MIG, needs some TLC

OK guys i picked up a gasless mig last week as a starter machine, to do some DIY bits and bobs and work on my gokart frame.

Its a Cosmo 100 which i think has been sold previously in places like homebase etc, and ive done a few mods to it as advised on here such as changing the feed guide in the wire and also securing the feed rollers with some, essentially, meccano.

However the gun itself has a knackered tip and a missing shroud. The Shroud seems to be M8 however upon unscrewing the tip it seems to be a 4mm thread:

Most places seem to only sell m6, is this correct or am i missing something?

How long should i get a shroud? ie, what length of exposed wire should be between the end of the contact tip and the end of the inside of the shroud?


Yes i know its a gasless and a cheap one at that but its for think metal and im looking forward to trying it out.

I just had to get some of those (shroud and tip). The tip is M5 and the shroud came from a twin pack branded Clarke.

Looking at the tip it looks like a tip used in the low powered clarkes
Shroud could be the same

Aye those are the very same ones I just got to test with before I installed a Euro torch. Got them from local welding shop, shroud was a couple of quid and tips were pennies each.

i know it was cheap but cheap and gasless will not do well on thin metal looks like 2 power settings and no wire speed control so assuming 100 amps and 50 amps no good on thin metal find some 3mm steel to learn with
best of luck with it but not the kind of welder to learn on

That is very limited.
Don't throw too much money at it putting it right . I think you will soon be binning that as you will struggle to get results.
