I have a new replacement exhaust back box for my vw 94 polo breadvan I would like to spray paint it for extra protection with HT paint am I wasting my time ? If not what paint do you use and recommendations on prep etc.
Ok have lots of zinc 182 so mite give it a blast over with that , I know they rust from inside out and noticed on my old exhaust that is still on the car has rusted out on the pipe that is welded to the back box..
i think in the end it will die from inside out , but no harm in trying to help it last , ive had good luck with bbq paint and screwfix zinc spray which is fairly cheap too
found the breadvan ones seem to crack on the little plate they add between the pipe and box , so if you can reweld that do so
Welding is no prob but the effort in doing so and for the price of £25 for new back box exhaust that I have brought not worth it really. I will chop part of the straight pipe on old exhaust for when middle section is on its last legs and chop out mid box and make my self a straight through exhaust
when I weld exhausts (not long done mine) I just use what ever spray paint I have lying around to cover the area I have cleaned with the grinder. high temp paint doesn't really stop rust, its a very thin watery paint ime, the acrylic I use will burn off eventually, but by that time the inside of the joint will have started to rust anyway
I did my brothers exhaust on his bmw and we only had a ford st orange lying around, so that went on lol.
if its a new part it will probably be galved anyway, the only part you need to worry about is anything you grind back to weld on. if you aren't welding it it will be fine, if you are, just paint the bit that you have welded
They still do pot black, used on manifolds,i know they're cast but do remember years ago painting one plus the whole exhaust top to bottom, lasted ages never burnt off
