Piano hinges

I need one of these for the front of my trailer. I decided an opening flap across the front would enable me to carry longer items like RSJs etc.

The front of the trailer is 145 wide by 125 high. I cut the 3mm ali sheet in half so the bottom will hinge up.
Trying to decide what material to go for. Needs to be fairly heavy duty as the trailer's main purpose is to carry 2.5 tons of wood.

I have seen aluminium hinges but I am not too keen on a ali pin bearing on ali. Then again the number of times the flap will be opened is minimal.
Anyone got experience of good quality hinges? Price seems to vary between £15 and £120!

Find some tube and bar that match up, cut the tube into however many parts you think looks right and weld flat bar along both sides, obviously alternate welds....in effect make your own heavy duty piano hinge.

Very strong and if you place removeable pins in one end of the bar it can quickly be detached.

By quirk of fate, I have going through the same scenario trying to source piano hinges for my ‘34 Hornet bonnet top & sides.
The vintage restoration firms sell them but at a premium (mucha dinero).
However I was told most of the hinges are made by a firm called Gold & Wassall & although mainly wholesale they will sell to individuals (they told me they would, when I approached them).
They hold in stock some common sizes of steel & brass hinges, anything out of the norm they make to order.

I'm sure it was them I bought mine from......ages ago.....

for my 1934 Commer bread van.......did the tool locker and the sparewheel lid..tother side......
I bought solid brass BUT BEWARE the pin is mild steel......mine was changed for 316 St/Steel once I got home.....
that was almost 35 years ago and it still functions.......
making a new split bonnet from ally and will be using the same style hinge......
back on the road after 20 odd years in the wood.......
