Photo slideshow software

I know there is a few keen photographer types on here and for the wake we are setting up a screen and want to show a slide view of digital pictures. I'm tech friendly but time is running out and so looking for recommendations of viewing software that has an intuitive GUI and can do some nice transitions and maybe also allow us to put some names on some of the photos of past members of the family so people know who they are.

windows has its own slideshow via its screensaver mode

paint program can put names on photos and so can photoshop

XnView and Irfan View are ones I use. They can save slideshows as an exe file so you compose them beforehand and you just need to double click on the file and off you go.

Irfanview is fantastic software, I've never used it for a slideshow but have used it for batch file conversion where you can get them all a sequential name. It's also excellent at shrinking file sizes on pictures. You can take 8MB picture and shrink it too a few hundred KB seemingly with very little degradation.

The simplest way I find is to import pictures into power point. It might get not be the latest thing, but I’m not very IT savvy but it always works for. Just did a presentation at work this afternoon. Set up one slide as a template then away you go

Thanks for the ideas, I played with them all today, XnView comes in two variants - classic and MP - classic did everything I wanted but I forgot that while I'm setting it up on a windows PC we are using a Mac lappy on the day and classic isn't multi platform but while the MP variant is, it has dropped some of the features due to cross platform compatibility. IrfanView did everything but transition options, it does have an alpha blend option which softened it but I really wanted some varied transitions. Both of those look like great bits of software I'll keep for that ever eluding task of scanning all my old pics and tagging them if I ever get round to it.

I ended up the evening playing with PowerPoint as I have office 2013, again it did everything I wanted except playing them in random order as there is too many to manually organise them into a sequence but a bit of googling found that very nice person had written a macro that once installed only takes a couple of extra clicks to play them randomly, link below if anyone ever needs the same feature.

Have you looked at ProShow Producer it is dedicated software for making slide shows. You can mix photos and videos, add audio, transitions, motion effects etc.
