Photo Negative size

I've got a book of photographic negatives which I want to scan.

They are dated (according to the index) from '53 (1953, I'd guess?), and are mainly locomotives so potentially valuable.

There's 150 of them, and they're all cut into separate images.

I bought a negative scanner - and they don't fit!

Each image is about 5mm bigger in both dimensions than a credit card, so around 90x60mm.

I can't find a reference to any standard film that gives this size negative, so I can't find a scanner which will scan them.

Any ideas/recommendations

I had a look through eBay, and couldn't find anything close - 35mm scanners are just too small.

Possibly quarter plate size (3 1/4 × 4 1/4 inches). Was used on cameras such as the Speed Graphic...

Yes that is it 6x9 cm or 2&1/4" x3&1/4" in old money, should be loads of detail in the big old negatives.

@bigegg If they are post 1953 it would have to be exeptional composition of 'very' unusual classes or location, to make them valuable.
Be aware that companies and individuals used to sell negatives "copies" and a such hold the original copyright
If they are original negatives (this means you have copyright) with descriptions and or an index this will help greatly.

Whilst I hate the modern idea of 'orphan images' on the net I don't think you need to worry about copyright on sixty year old negatives.

@zx9 Thats only for "value" if they are unpublished and of something unusual / location ..if they are commercial copies ..then value is not much

Asahi Pentax made an SLR 6x7 which took phenomenal photos compared with their 35mm offering albeit the camera was very heavy to use without a tripod

Yes - there's an index (for the first 40 at least), and since some of them are labelled "mother", and "work" interspersed with train numbers + locations (mainly around London, I think: unless there's another "Paddington"?), I'm guessing they're all original.
Also, some of the pictures aren't "commercial" quality.



The "book" is also contemporary.

I just bought myself a v500 scanner, with the negative holders.
Thanks again for the offer @Kayos - I really appreciate it, but after consideration I will have enough use for a scanner to make a purchase worthwhile. (Plus, it was only £25! on FB)

£25 makes me cry but glad I could help you find what you needed

If using epson scan you need to be in pro mode and set the correct negative size before scanning, cant remember the native resolution off the top of my head but always scan at that so any processing is done post scan
