Iv had an iphone for two years with a leather case which had a magnet on it and never had any issues then I changed to an otter case as work involved more working at heights and so on felt the otter case be better if I dropped it by accident

Anyway within id say a month of changing to the otter case the speaker went from iron filings and steel dust i work with lasers so loads of fine metal dust

Anyone on here tried any covers like the otter one but with better speaker protection

I don't know how good it would be against fine metal dust but I know someone with a case (I've asked him what it is but he hasn't got back to me yet) that is made from 2 pieces of rubberised aluminium with a piece of glass over the screen and it bolts together with the phone inside. He's dropped it and thrown it and it's held up perfectly. The downside is it looks stupid, weighs loads and is massive to hold. Have a look at waterproof cases, they'll be dust proof too. I know what you mean about metal dust killing the speaker, it happened to my Sony and then to the new one I got under warranty.

When I was doing actual work fitting central heating, so many phones ended up with the speaker full of steel wool

Never found a case that could stop it, I just got good at swapping the speakers

I run a waterproof Sony, dunno how good it will be with dust but I tend to drown stuff. You might think it would be better?

I had the Otterbox Armor series for the
S3 Lte, first one sounded like everything was under water at both ends of the call, second warranty case had slightly better audio, slightly, it was waterproof to 6ft for 30min, 10ft drop to concrete, but bottom line the audio sucked! I now have Note4 Defender case, not dust or waterproof but tough, if I need to keep the dust or splashes off, I use a zip lock sandwich bag from Lidl, you get about 20 for about £1.5 works a treat and you can still get good audio.

I have tried both the lifeproof and the griffin defender cases. Defender has more rubber around it but is not completely waterproof. Also the glass protector which is anclear plastic type material geos dull and makes it hard to see the smaller details. Also its sometimes hard to touch/click icons on the corners of the screen. Dropped several times from top of a frames and it survived with no damage at all. Also went for a couple of dips including the toilet! Survived all of that.

Lifeproof is completely waterproof and very slim, the screen plastic is very good. It has also survived drops and being dipped into pints to demonstrate the waterproof capabilities! It has gasketed lids and covers for the ports and to use a headphone you need the screw in adaptor that comes with it. Mine lasted 6 months but went through the warranty claim and they replaced it with a new one. I think otter and lifeproof are one company now.

In conclusion if the exclusion of small particles or takibg your iphone swimming is paramount then lifeproof is the one you want. If you drop it twice a day like I do than griffin survivor is the one for you.
They are both very good cases, just shame about how poor the iphone is.

the case you need for your I-phone is made my lunatik . i have one on mine highly recommended, no iron filings have gone in mine had the phone in the same case 18 months now I take it out every now and then to check it and it still looks as new as the day I had it new

I had this problem with my current phone, had it repaired a few times, and had a replacement handset.
Previous phones wern't a problem using the silicone type covers.


Every week or so, I give it a clean out, hold a thin piece of white paper over the speakers, and use a strong magnet and sweep over the speakers a dozen times or so. The amount of dust that comes out is incredible. Instantly better.

I wasnt sure if using a big magnet would be a good idea, but had nothing to loose, as if it didnt work id need a repair anyway.

ive used re-sealable plastic bags after trashing one phone's speakers it works perfect even in the bag even the touch screen

I had an otterbox cover for my phone, total rubbish!! had a real nightmare trying to return it and get my money back, they ended up sending me 3 different replacement cases which I promptly put on ebay and then I bought a lifeproof one (if it's waterproof it must be dustproof), have had that for almost a year and it's brilliant, not sure how well it would stand up to a very long fall though.
