Phone charging leads.

I am in need of some new phone charging leads.

I went through a phase of magnetic connectors and whilst i found then good after a while they get small bits of magnetic crap stuck to them creating a poor contact that overheats and burns the connectors.

I could go on ebay and buy rubbish at a high price or to a shop and still have no idea of quality.

Anyone got any suggestions what a good lead it...Need micro usb and also iphone 7.

I have a goodmans cable but 13 quid seems a bit steep...

Not all cables are the same, I don't have apple stuff but have about 20 different micro usb cables, and find that only 3 of them are any good for charging. The others either don't let the device charge or only allow a trickle charge. The difference between good cables and bad can mean 3-4 hours difference in charging times from nearly flat. Branded cables tend to be better, Phillips, Goodmans, Sony et al. Although some seem to be rebadged generic rubbish. It can be a bit of a lottery! I find a good indicator is the thickness of the cables, the thicker the better.

I have a juice branded one payed 40 compared to the 5er cheap ones I used to buy it’s really noticeable difference in charge time and Life of charger I’m on 3rd phone with it cheap ones used to last me no length maybe 2months considering I only change phone every 2 year I’m happy with it .. better quality than apple own in my opinion

Genuine ones are the best way to go imo, But these can't be 100% depending on the source you buy them from in my experience!

For the lightning connector on the iPhone 7 I have griffin cable and 12v adaptor for use in my van. Adaptor gets a bit warm when charging but the cable is a lot thicker than the supplied one. But tend to keep it in my van so doesn’t get used at home

Can't go wrong with Anker cables IMO.

Well priced and excellent quality.

Don't muck about with eBay rubbish.

I've always found the pound type shops one to be fine. Must be the luck of the draw.

As someone mentioned though, the thicker cable ones generally perform better.

Only had a handful of the iPhone ones, so not a vast amount of those, but I may just've been lucky in that they all worked. Have noted that they do those Micro/Lightning ones, (the type where they have a push on adapter), but not tried one of those. Seem to have a decently thick, braided cable though.

I stick with the pound/import leads for mine, (Micro connector), as I have to trim the end for most leads to fit my phone. I'd be gutted doing that with an expensive lead.

It's a very sturdy braided lead with a nice quality micro end connector and the lead is supported at the ends so they don't break the wires right at the plug. Plugs in with a reassuring firm click and 6 foot long too which is handy if you use the phone a lot and want to use it whilst charging.

A relatively small voltage drop at 5V will have quite a significant impact on the charging efficiency. If the connections at either end get more than barely warm during charging at typical smartphone charging rates, say 2A, then an improvement can probably be obtained using a better lead, preferably short (0.5 - 1m max) and a quick blast of compressed/canned air and some contact cleaner.

Because these are data block cables, malware won't be able to suck data off your smartphone if charging off someone's PC.

I have a Belkin lead with Micro USB. This then has a removable female adapter that fits the Micro USB and has iPhone connector at other end

They work well and are cheap. The magnets do attract metal dust though which can be a problem when doing metalwork. I've found Blu Tack is the best way of cleaning the magnets.

I use Anker braided cables, my phone will fully recharge in just under two hours with one compared to around five hours with an off brand one or the one Samsung one it came with (which used to work but it degraded in about a month).
