I need a beam for a table, spanning about 2m (will be a pair), with a flat flange on the top for bolting stuff to. (10mm holes every 100mm)
Load unknown, probably a couple of hundred kg distributed along the length.
I'm trying to decide between either 100x50 PFC, which has the advantage of already having a convenient flange and quite beefy material (spec seems to be approx 5mm web and 8mm flange).
Or 100x50x3 box, which I'd then have to weld some (probably 4mm) angle on, to provide said flange.
Both sections orientated so the load bears on the longest dimension (assuming no sideways loading.)
By the time I've bought the angle, they both are a wash for cost, probably around the same weight per meter and I suspect both options are going to be massively overkill.
I'm guessing the box works out the stronger/stiffer design, but without spending a lot of time calculating it, I'm not so sure.
Channel would certainly be a lot less work.
I'm pretty sure it is impossible to give any real answer without calcuating the loading, but just curious to know what peoples gut feeling is on which way to go.
