Peugeot boxer with transmission fault

I am looking for suitable vehicle ie a DROPSIDE truck, there are plenty on line ,I have seen a Peugeot boxer with transmission problem exactly what I don’t know ……. Are transmission a weak point in this vehicle?
It’s done 35k which is nothing

I've a pug boxer, great vehicle.

No the gearboxes are pretty bullet proof, thinking about it I'm on my second one.

Head gaskets rot out at 300 k kms, or twenty years, I'm only on my second as someone drove into the first and wrote it off.

Great vehicles, spacious.

Our 2018 Relay (same vehicle) needed a new box at ~1500 miles after it lost synchromesh between 4th & 5th. I’ve heard of others needing similar.

If it’s a very old 5 speed, then gearbox parts may be very difficult to find (hen’s teeth).

If it's anything like the old SOFIM box- Fiat/Peugeot/Iveco etc. the 5th gear was a satellite addition to the old 4 speed, and runs out of lube if 5th gear is used under 50mph for long. What helps is to go from 1.5l to 1.9l of oil together with an additive.

6 speed boxs had crap bearings bearing go so mainshaft and layshaft come together only a few mil between the two

I've a 2014 Dispatch with a fault in the 6 speed box, code ML6C. It jumps out of 1st gear if you lift off the throttle or accelerate too quick. Finding it very difficult to find a replacement box in the breakers yards over here. It has to be the exact same model of 6 speed box, another model with different ratios causes the ABS ecu to throw up a fault.

Depending on the age of the Boxer it could be that the scuttle drain dumps rainwater onto the top of the transmission allowing it to enter which causes all sorts of problems. There is a modified drain available but the damage is already done . The problem was worse on vans with low mileage for some reason although as already suggested an extra 1/2 lt of oil helps . Parts for some older vans are difficult to find .

I'm looking at around £7-800 for a rebuild! The parts alone are close to £300 minimum, could be even more depending on what you find once you strip the box. A box from the breakers is around £350, if I can find one!

I got the van remapped & it now has that much torque it will happily pull away in 2nd gear, so the need for a new box is not as urgent.

same box Bob not sure but think old 5 speed case with 6 speed gears so gears are thinner to fit in the case

Ive got a 16reg Citroen relay 119,000 mile's no problems at all. But we have a 17 reg that's had the box repaired twice in under 50,000 miles and a 18reg that's had the box repaired once in under 30,000 miles.

M32, had one in the Vauxhall Shatfira.
Lasted 38 thousand miles and just out of warranty before it started wining.
£600 for a rebuild that lasted it out until the rest of the car was knackered, egr valves x4, DPF filter, swirl flaps in the inlet manifold etc. SWMBO reversed it into the skip in the end and I called enough after that!
