The real sneaky thing now is they don't flash, if they are fitted with infrared cameras, they can take high resolution pictures in any light condition, be it day or night.
They are just cash generators, and as speeding is an absolute offence, they are there to prove that the law was broken, they have nothing to do with road safety.

They're usually painted bright yellow, when they aren't (or they're partly obsucured by overgrown trees etc) there are usually white painted markings on the road (gatso, truvelo) to give the game away not to mention the warning signs before you reach them. You can also download maps of their locations, upload them into satnavs and probably get apps for them too.
If you get caught by a fixed camera then you'relucky to not be done deserve to be done for driving without due care and attention IMO. Mobile scamera vans hiding out of sight and clocking you from 1/2 a mile away as you pass from a national speed limit into a 40mph zone on the other hand... that's playing dirty for some cash as everyone* just eases off and lets the speed scrub off naturally unless there's a reason to brake

That's like the road from our village into town, national speed limit and no central white line but it does have white lines on either side, about 1m in, to give the impression that the road is narrower than it is. Just awaiting my most recent one, from a Truvelo that I've been past probably two hundred times or more. I even agree with its location (near a pub with a concealed entrance on a 70mph dual carriageway) and I've always slowed down - er, I mean, made sure I wasn't speeding, ossifer - until last week when I was (a) on the bloody phone and (b) irritated by a woman in a red Focus who would NOT get out of the way. Eventually she did and I hoofed it past her, only registering the bloody box on a pole as I flashed past it doing something slightly in excess of the speed for a goods vehicle 
Still, as I always say, it's karma for all the times I don't get caught

I'm waiting on one as well, car in front was veering from verge to centreline and speed varying from 40 to 60mph, obviously 'checking their status on face book' or similar so I floored it to get past, just in time to see a traffic car tucked in a layby, I guess I was doing about 75 in a 60mph!

I got caught in Glasgow 15 years ago, I saw the flash as it happened but I knew before it took the picture that in was getting done. I was speeding and saw the camera and banged on the brakes, got it down to 47 from warp speed. It could of been a lot worse than a £60 fine and 3 points. The ticket landed on the door mat 13 days later.

Someone on the web used to sell a film that you put over the number plate that was supposed to reflect the flash from Gatso's, I have no idea whether it worked or not. A neighbour of mine used to hang a CD in the windscreen, she swore blind that it attracted the laser & stopped it working...... Yeah right just carry on then. I'm not sure if many use lasers anyway, even so about as much use as a chocolate teapot. I don't think there is much that would fool the system.

Not if your numberplate is ringed by infra-red emitters
Infra-red is detected/processed by any electronic/digital optical unit, so it isn't limited to IR cameras.

A road i use a lot starts off as residential with a 30 limit then opens a bit and the limit increases to 40 before fields and national speed limit signs replace the houses. There's a camera along both the 30 and 40 limit stretches, Mr 40mph does 40 through the lot only slowing down to 25ish for both (!??) the cameras. When the road's clear enough i normally stamp on the loud pedal around the change to national speed limit and often get blasted with a horn and main beams as i overtake the numpty, presumably because they think i'm the one driving badly
