what would be the maximum thickness of steel a 160 amp mig could weld with .8mm wire
seriously thinking about the r-tech 180 mig/mma, but it will only run to 160 off a 13 amp fuse.

I have one, bout 5mm for mig side. But you can use the sticks ide for much thicker if you need...

Yep, about 5mm. But the stick side of it will run a 3.2mm rod or probably even a 4mm, and if you prepare the metal to be welded (i.e grind V's to fill in) there isn't any thickness that it can't weld, provided the duty cycle is adequate to stop you every 3 minutes - I've no idea what it is on that machine.

Duty cycle is great on that, about 60% at 150 A off the top of my head and 100% at 120 A sounds familiar.

That sounds OK - you could run a 3.2mm rod non stop, so the thickness of the metal you're welding should be limited only by your imagination and patience!

5mm should be fine with the mig side, but if you put an mma stinger on it a 4mm rod will run happily at 140 amps, and you can weld some seriously thick steel with a 4mm rod.
