Had the exact same issue with a couple of boards with a HD4200 on the northbridge (Asus board perchance?) - all it was was the heatsink had come loose and wasn't making full contact, so the northbridge was running hot, leading to beeps for temperature warnings, unstable operation and that rendering issue when the graphics core overheated. A reseat with new thermal paste and adhesive sorted one of them, but I also had one that seemed to have been damaged by the constant high temperatures (although, apparently that one had been doing it for months before they brought it to me....so...)

Interesting..it is an Asus board, mate could be right about the paste then.

Could well be it then, some decent paste and a reseat on the NB heatsink might sort your issues with a bit of luck.

Approx a dozen stops and restarts throughout the day and no issues at all, not a single lock up or problem.

Looks like it was overheating and transferring that heat to the graphics section as mentioned.

Feeling rather chuffed the old girl has been brought back to life with such a simple fix.

It will report all your voltages and temperatures from the onboard sensors.

i would let your mate re paste the CPU and fit a new CPU cooler and fan to it

It's probably not the CPU cooler that's the issue, the graphics chip is part of the northbridge.

i would let your mate re paste the CPU and fit a new CPU cooler and fan to it

Yes I am going to arrange a service with him and get some software added, I was lucky with my fix and a good up date to it won't do any harm.

Another chip that's usually just below the main CPU, it handles the system interconnects and, in the case of that IGP, has the GPU core and it's interconnects to the system memory controller on it.
They're getting phased out these days as more and more ends up on the chip itself, but you'll see a small heatsink just below the main one, IIRC it's a passive one on those, so no fan on it (although, if you fit a fan, you can overclock the hell out of them, double the stock speed isn't uncommon )
