PC fan speed control

I want to run a PC quite slow, I've tried it with my variable voltage bench top power supply and works perfectly so I ordered one of the those cheap dimmer modules which also works but makes the fans whine quite audibly.

Would one of these do the job without the whine?

the noise will be the PWM )pulse width modulation) - it runs the fan slow by essentially turning the power on and off really really fast... you control the speed by how long the fan is on or off for

I'm guessing it's not in a pc?

how much control do you need over the speed?

if your bench top power supply worked well enough (which just lowers the voltage) you could just add a resistor to the feed for the fan

or post back with the fan power (should be a sicker on the fan) and what voltage it runs at, I'll be able to work out what value resistor you need to run it at exactly what the bench top power supply ran it at :-)

I have rum 12v pc fans slower just by running them from 9v or 5v wall-wart type cheap supplys.
If it's just to hush down the noise try getting some better fans. I have used some big (140mm I think) thermaltake fans on a project that run on 12v but you can barely hear them

No not in a pc, its to help my caravan fridge keep my beer cold this weekend In this warm weather and with the awning up the heat builds up behind the vents, taking the vents off helps a bit but leaves 2 big holes in the side of the caravan so I thought I'd try it with a fan just gently helping the airflow which seemed to help a lot the other day when I left it running on the benchtop psu at something like 7-8v (I'd just use that but its quite big and has a noisy fan in). I'l give this one a go then and see how it goes, thank you.

I did try it with a 9v one but sadly that failed after 10 mins, could be coincidence though as it was an old one I fond in my box of redundant power supplies. If it works over the weekend I will buy some better fans as these ones were old ones but worked of the benchtop psu so hoped they'd be good for a full test run.

PC fans will run happily on a lower voltage. I run mine on 7v in my PC and have done for more years than I care to remember. In a PC power supply you have 12v and 5v on the connectors and you can connect the fan between the 12v and the 5v wires and you will get 7v to your fan. Obviously this info is no use in your situation apart from letting you know running a lower voltage is not an issue.

I had one of these to run a 12v 5" fan slower in my car, works a treat handles up to 2000w

The one I ordered arrived this morning and I just had time to quickly get it connected, worked perfect, super silent slow running fans, now the real test will be if it keeps the beer colder this weekend once I have the awning up facing into the sun

Just put a 12 v fan on a 5 v USB supply, that gets you a silent fan.
