Don't talk to me about PCs. Been busy reinstalling the my brother-in-law's girlfriend's old PC for use for the little ones. Of course, none of the OEM XP disks I've got are Packard Bell, so I had to build one, so I took the opportunity to slipstream SP3 in. Still needs a network card, a flat monitor (no space for the CRT we got with it that I gave him back in the day) and a bit of RAM. It's a bit annoying that I can get 2gig of ram for my laptop for less than the price of 1gig for this'un.
Mrs Chunkolini crawled inside the PC tower and dedusted everything, and so far it seems ok, the next test is to try King Kong Versus Godzilla again; any volunteers? it is a truly traumatic film.
Will report back later.
Hopefully that's all it will be Chunko', dust is a computer's worst enemy.
I took my tower down to my garage a few weeks ago and blew it out with my airline, there was so much dust in there the air was thick with it!
That's the first time it's been clean since I built it 2 years ago and it certainly made a huge difference to the running temperature.
When cleaning them, pay particular attention to heatsinks, fans and also the power supply. Air dusters are only a few quid and are well worth having. Although I used it, air from a compressor isn't ideal as it may contain moisture.
Apparently there was a 'rattle rattle' of 'something going up the pipe of the vacuum cleaner, Mrs C delved into the dust bag, yeeuuk (bunny poop etc, we have a sodding house bunny) it was one of the plastic clips broken of the casing.
Here was I wandering through the back room, where my desktop-cum-print-and-file-server is kept. I kept wondering what that hot electronics smell was. Didn't think it was the computer as I thought it was coming from the kitchen door area. I thought perhaps someone had overheated a saucepan handle.
Anyway, I'm jobhunting at the moment, trying to get into accounts, when I found I couldn't upload my CV (stored on my desktop). Had a look, and heard the fan labouring, and the power supply was getting a tat warm. So off with the side panel, in with the Dyson, and a quick reboot later all was well.
Big thanks from Mrs Chunkolini and all,
Junior watched the awful King Kong movie yesterday, no glitches or anything. Great stuff, who would have thought that a piece of dust could cause that sort of problem.
But then again the solar system stars and all are just made of dust, all beit lots of it. I can recomend a biik here. 'The Secret Life of Dust' by Hannah Holmes, a great book about dust. One to frive the other mad with by popping up with random useless facts.
Well, my upgrade bits turned up yesterday, Intel Core2Quad 6700, Gigabyte EP45 DS3P motherboard, Akasa CPU cooler and 4 Gb Kingston HyperX DDR2 1066.
Already got a buyer for my old stuff too!

It sounds like your computer is having a hard time keeping up with the speed the movie wants to play at. A good way to cure it might be this.
Rip the dvd to your hard drive and make a copy then play from there. A big saving in cpu power and annoying dvd drive noise. If you get any probs with the copying to your hard drive just use DVD shrink or similar. This often used to work a lot better than the dvd itself on my laptop.
