I am thinking of making a patio out of part of the garden, but need to price it up first.

The area I want to slab is about 90M2 and is currently grassed.

Once the turf has been dug up, how deep should the hardcore be? And from that how many tonne would I need?

Then how much sand would I need to make a bed on the hardcore and how much additional for mixing the cement?

Lastly how many bags of cement??

Any input would be appreciated so I can have a look at builders merchants websites tonight to get at least a rough idea of the cost.

For a permanent job that won't sink you need to remove the topsoil down to the subsoil, that will allow you to work out how many cubic metres of hardcore you require to get it back to the height you want.

Depth x width x length = cubic metres

I would compact and level the hardcore, builders merchants sell ground quarry waste which compacts great.

I would then mix a weak sand/cement mix, just moist enough to work, a depth of a couple of inches is fine and use that for laying the slabs on.
