Parweld 171 C wire feed,

Hi,

After a lot of reading around, I bought myself a brand new Parweld 171 C. Problem is that the wire won't feed properly.

The wire is all the way through to the torch. When I press the trigger away from metal, the wire feeds, but the feed motor speeds up and slows down with each rotation of the wire feed drive wheel.

When I try to weld, the feed motor seems to lack power and the feed is even slower and the wire comes through in pulses corresponding with the rotation of the wire feed wheel.

I ran the wire feed spindle by itself with the wire gripper wheel (not sure of names!) off. Ran smooth. Put the wheel on (wire not in) and ran it against my finger. Feels slightly oval shaped not round.

Is this normal?

I have the same welder and had a similar issue, is it only at lower wire feed speeds or throughout the range?

For me it was just at low speeds and I sorted it by lowering the tension on the wire mounting shaft that stops over rotation. I did have to reduce it a fair way but it seems fine now. I think the fluctuation was due to the variation in motor toque depending on the relative rotor/stator magnet positions. It's only noticeable due to the load on the motor and the slow speed.

Saying this I never checked the out-of-roundness of the feed wheel though but I bought it from weldequip on here so I'm fairly confident all is as it should be.

Actually, looking at the tensioner wheel, it is visible off true. I'll take it back. Thanks for the advice!

I got a replacement tensioner wheel (for free!). This one works better, however it is still noticeable that the upper tensioner wheel and the arm it is attached to raise at one point in the wheel's journey round.

At low speeds wire speeds (say 3) the wire speed drops dramatically when I weld compared to if I hold the torch unearthed. Is that normal?

I am new to this, so it could be me - pointers welcome!
