just a couple of pictures taken of many jobs i see that were done by kitchen and bedroom fitters. part p was designed to eliminate these folk doing dodgy wiring . all they do is go on a weeks course and hey presto there registered it took me years with an apprenticeship to learn the trade . ive trained a few youngsters. it takes at least a year before letting them half loose to do wiring to a good standard with routine checks on most of what they do . what the eye doesnt see these photos were taken after the new ish cupboards had been fitted for a year with extended cables and now removed to expose cables that wernt double insulated or even had proper joint boxes. price of 2 jointboxes £1.50 price of a blanking plate 75 pence

Its surprising there isnt more people injured/killed or houses on fire due to bad wiring. Work like that seems to get the guys doing the crap job more work as the home owner doesnt see it and the price suites - they think they are getting a bargain but long term it wont last and its just as easy to pay that wee bit extra at the start of the job and have it done correctly.

Can you report the workers that did that work???

iknow the local kitchen firm that did it . on another job i worked at i tested the wiring on 2 ringmains that had 15 amp fuses fitted and was going to uprate fuses to 30 amp . kitchen fitters fitted new kitchen with wiring. i returned to find a break in ring main . the customer got a load of flannel bout it not being there fault till i talked to them they sent a proper electrician to sort it and i replaced the fuses to corect size needles to say he didnt bull ./././t me

Sadly that’s the problem with some regulations, its designed to stop the cowboys but all it does seem to do is stop the good diyer the cowboys carry on regardless

Found an interesting one last week, an office was been re-decorated and they wanted another socket outlet fitted, no problem to add one next to an existing.
Now we have a system at work of marking all electrics with a code showing where they are fed from (handy as we have 20+ boards!) so I thought I'd mark the old sockets, traced them back to find 3 sockets off different phases turns out it was seperate offices knocked into 1 big one a few years ago but no-one thought about the wiring dangers.
Now all on the same phase.

Whats stupid about the regulations (residential) is that anyone can adapt an existing circuit (ring main, radial etc.) but can't put a new one in with out it being certified.

Now most people that don't have a clue will mess about with existing but will never think of putting in a whole new circuit.

Are they automotive grade crimp fittings too? I bought a machine cheap non working and took the cover off and it was wired up with them inside the motor cover and the wires had come out the fittings. It seems they'd overheated with the current going through them and gone soft and lost their grip! Fix, worked, still got it

they are the correct lugs and size. if the guy was that lazy all he had to do was crimp them and cover with a chockbox to double insulate them or use proper jointboxes with screw conections

I first did wiring aged about 10 when I helped my Dad rewire a friends house. He's an electrical engineer of the big substations with rubber mats on the floor type.

I then did a couple of summer jobs as an electricians assistant doing mainly burglar alarms and shopfitting electrics.

I then mostly rewired my own houses, replacing sockets, ceiling roses, switches etc.

Recently I had a new breaker board installed - swapped all the sockets in the house plus added extras all over the show first. Then a sparky I know did the board itself (sorry MK he was cheaper!).

More recently i got annoyed by there being no sockets at the front of the garage. Ones at the back run washer and drier (interestingly off the upstairs ring main), and a freezer (downstairs ring!). Never anywhere to plug tools etc in. I figured out that the random spur to a socket was going to the fridge in the kitchen, and the spare breaker in the board was only 15A.

So I got another breaker from my mate and ran my own new ring main, runs off the RCD, proper cable, proper connections etc.

Presumably I have commited an offence and could be prosecuted. Yet muppets with a piece of paper bodge things freely.

il be quite honest here yes firms who carry out electrical work have to be registered working in kitchens bathrooms and out door circuits . and fitting new db .s if there work is found defective and dangerous then can be prosecuted for both . if u do your own wiring in your own house providing its up to the mark and done properly up to the latest regs u wont have any bother . hips is no longer needed when selling a house so if u have fitted new db and earthbonded gas water ect fitted new circuits theres not a problem u cant prosecute someone for doing a good job even if not registered i get my work inspected once a year and if anythings wrong im made to put it rite and get a warning if its serious im struck off
