parkside battery drill problem

My old parkside drill, 18v Li on has suddenly stopped dead, stripped the battery and all cells show 4.17v with no load, total shows 20v no load, when you connect the drill the no load voltage drops to 15v and when you pull the trigger it goes to 0v so far so bad, what seems strange to me is that when you pull the trigger and the voltage drops to 0v all the cells still show over 4v and the total across the pack still shows around 20v but the voltage after the circuit board goes to 0v...…… must be the board above the battery??

Dead cell. I pulled some very good looking battery cells out of one of those packs. Looked great at 4.3v but when I stuck it into an old Nikon batt pack it killed the thing stone dead. No load volts is a good indicator but not the whole story. Get a bulb on them individually and test them under load.

Just be very careful if you strip the pack apart, very easy to short out a cell which could lead to a nasty incident. Don't bin it though, I can re-cell them but I doubt if it's really worth twice the postage.

what I suppose I need is another battery pack to test it, the cells show good voltage, 20v with no load AND with the trigger pulled but the voltage measured upstream of the battery shows low volts (15v) when connected and 0v when the trigger is pulled, the only part between the cells and the trigger is the board on top of the cells, and wires, I am not that good with electrickery

Well @barking mat is bang on it could be a dodgy motor but that is less likely than a bad cell. Have you had the battery pack apart then? You have to remember those cells are EACH rated at 20 amps continuous and a whopping 70 amps if you accidentally short something out. Take my word for it, 70 amps is a lot of energy.

Must be someone on here in Essex with a Parkside battery pack?

Failing that can you buy a second one from lidl? Or something with an interchangeable battery pack?

Even though they are nominally "the same" the 20v packs are not compatible with the earlier 18v units. I read that somewhere while looking for some spares, not from direct experience.

I was more worried when taking apart the Segway pack, 92 8650 LIon PFE4? cells, I used the safety squint method,

I have only pulled the complete cell pack out of the case, but I can get to the bridging strips to check voltage,

would be happy to buy a pack so long as it cures the issue, none in Lidl, some new on Ebay, not cheap enough for a test

Hook the drill up to a car battery, that will confirm if that is the problem.
