Panel Beating

Hi Everyone

Joined the forum tonight to try get some background knowledge on some skills im looking to learn to complete a project car im working on.

Im keen to try keep any filler on the car to a minimum and by that i mean no more than an extremely light skin so I need to learn some panel beating

Does anyone have any good resources on panel beating, do's and don'ts etc most of my work will be on large flat panels that im smoothing out in an engine bay.

Yes have found him before, goes into plenty of detail, doesn't help to check out a few sources though.

I've also got a good book, will have to check the name because I can't remember it off the top of my head but it's more aimed at the making of panels than repairing, sure there's still some information you'd find useful in it though

Read a bit, remember that sheet metal can be cut/bent/shrunk/stretched/welded, then get your mallet out and have a bash (pun intended). There really is no substitute for just having a go, getting a feel for what can be done. Many fine cars have been built this way without expensive tooling.

Youtube also has many good vids on making suits of armour which will show what can be done with hammer and tree stump.

This is what im working towards and why im looking to learn the skills, Im just prepping all the panels for welding in atm to blank of any holes of. The rest of the wing will need some prep work to get right.



and this is what will be going between the wings when done.



Its a 1380 mini bottom end but has a modified engine block to take a 16v k1100 motor bike head, aiming for 130bhp at the end.

I have always wondered who does the Mini+K1100 maths.

I've been butt welding patches into cars for many many years and have never been happy with the warping that happens and I had put it down to the effects of the heat expanding the panels around the welded repair...
Until a bloke on an American forum pointed out and explained that the warping is caused by shrinking!
So, what he does is to use the ' spot' weld method and grind off the weld almost back to panel height and then planish out therefore stretching the metal back to the proper place. I have recently been doing this on a Manta I am restoring and it works really well.
I have butt welded into panels and planished and the metal panel is still straight.
