I was wondering if anyone knew of any basic panel beating workshops/courses around the North West? I might buy some books on the subject but can't help but think it would be much better to learn watching someone else work..
There's only really 3 things involved in metal shaping... you can bend it, stretch it and shrink it. Books, vids, google or a course/tutor will take of the 'how to' and other methods/techniques used. A tutor obviously has the advantage of being interactive but as with playing an instrument or welding the only way to learn is to practice...
Hammer forming would good place to start IMO as you can end up with usable parts quickly while learning/getting a feel for how metal moves. Simple little exercise here although if they'd made the hammerform slightly larger (so that it reached the bend tangent line) there'd be less marring of the piece. Can then move on to something like a scrap panel (dent it and then straighten) or making a teardrop blister either the way it was done in the link or by roughing it out into a shotbag before planishing it smooth
