Sign shop vinyl should be decent quality. I had a guy insist on using made-for-purpose tape stripes, even though I offered to paint them. First lot was thin (showed base colour through, though light orange stripe-tape wouldn't help), and the tack was very low, it wanted to lift and objected to even slight curves. Binned that, the next lot was solid colour, but quite thick.
You can get stripe masking tape ready-cut, it either has the stripe already cut out, or you slap it on and peel off the "stripe". No idea what it's like though.
3M plastic tape to mask & spray, or "The Edge" tape is supposed to be good too. Spray lightly, build gradually, to minimise paint build at tape edge.
The tapes comes in 3mm/6mm/12mm etc. So you can lay one edge, then tape next to it using tape of width equal to the stripe you want, then tape the other edge. So three parallel tapes. Pull middle one, squirt colour.
