Painting new gates and railings

Nearing closer to starting a little welding shop fabricating gates and railings and need a bit of advice on paint. What's the best method and paint to use that is going to look good for my customers and last? Do you guys always galvanise metal for outdoors or offer this as an option for customers?

no but my mate makes them for a living and gets them all galved unless the punter doesn't want to pay the price to get them done

I always galvanised gates and railings when i used to make them. The customer is always wanting to penny pinch and shave a few quid off the job, so in the pricing stage they kid themselves that they will regularly paint and keep up with maintenance meaning they don't need galvanising.

The upshot is you fit a pair of gates, they never bother to paint them, and within 6 months rust is streaming down them and staining the ground - and everyone loves to pick holes and spread the bad word.

Most gate designs leaves bits you'll just never get paint into.

as above, when I contract structural steel I _always_ insist on galv, no one ever keeps up to date with painting on towers

If the client says no I walk away..

Regarding the high build vinyl paint, how many coats normally required and would you use this paint on non galvanised parts also?

2 0r 3 coats sprayed on ok for none galv as well

whenever i paint on a galv surface,new or old ,i always spray on an acid etch solution initially to key the surface & guarantee the paint won't flake off,I've never had success waiting a year or so for the galv to "weather" - the paint comes off

try the high build vinyl then and u wont be disappointed then no need to etch
