Painting Damp

I have a section of wall that is damp. The wall is 20" thick, it will not be getting fixed, it is damp. What can I paint on it to stop the top coat of paint flaking off.

Yes, I appreciate this is a lash up but it is not my building and I am getting fed up vacuuming flaking paint off the wall.

It's not my normal building conservation advice, but I've scraped the loose stuff off the wall, painted on PVA (might have watered it down a bit, can't remember) then emulsion on top. That worked until the building was demolished.

That's a really good point 8ob. Scrape off the loose stuff and breathable paint on top should work well and have the advantage of not making the wall any damper. I use clay paint a lot. Twice the price of emulsion but twice the coverage too - most times single coat works.

When I lived in an old rented farm cottage I used this stuff .Blue circle stabilising solution..It's not a fix but it did glue flakey old stuff together.....

It's SBR.

PVA remains water soluble even after drying, SBR does not.

Sbr it's a modified pva that doesn't emulsify

I said waterproof pva re emulsifies if it gets wet . use sbr bonding agent styrene butadiene [ BIG WORD] its similar stuff quite thin but totally waterproof its used in damprooffing and tanking pools and walls and concrete floors ive dampproofed 4 houses using it with tanking slurry and injection cream I was fortunate to work with a builder that went on the sovereign dampproof course to become a registered installer needless to say I took great interest as I do all my own plastering as well. its fatal doing something in front of me as it will be copied

Then bog standard oil based undercoat 2 coats will do
