Painting ceramic tiles

Part of the garage attached to the house (not the garage with the workshop in) has a tiled walkway. This is fine but when you spill water on it, or come in from the woodstore in wet boots, your whole life flashes before you and you try desperately to stay standing. Not good when carrying a basket of logs, or an axe for that matter.

I want to paint them with non-stick sand paint - the stuff with sand in it - I don't care about the look, I just want to stop the near death experiences! I went to the paint shop today and they said I need a special primer to do this otherwise the paint will come off quickly. What might work well? And has anyone done this? I need help on this as I'm not at all familiar with this process.

Can you sand blast them to dull the glaze, you can get sand blasters with rubber cups that contain much of the sand.

You could get the tile paint that most DIY shops sell and add the sand to it. Experiment on a small area first or an old tile to see if it works. I've never seen a grip paint for tiles so making your own would probably be your best shot although that's not to say there is one somewhere out there! I've used the tile paint often in the past and it lasts quite well.

As above, I've just applied some to the front step which gets very slippy when wet [behave, now ] or if there's frost. Bought a big roll for about £29 so have loads left for reapplication if it ever starts to peel [which it will with time]

I put some in the shower on the tray to stop the slippage I didn't think it would last but 3 years on it is still going strong just clean it well before sticking

I don't have (nor plan to) get a sandblaster so that's off limits. Dad doesn't like tape so tape is a no go otherwise I would have done that first off.

How about some rubber matting? Glue it down if you need to, but I think it would be ideal. It would also look reasonable.

I've had good results on wall tiles by using dulux " supergrip " primer, made sure they were clean before applying, don't know about floor tiles, they'll get a lot more hammer.
Rubber mat sounds best idea.

dont think painting it will last very long seen meny a place with tile painted even with proper tile paint it washes off over months or few years so cant think walking on it will last even as long

as above rubber matting is a good idea it will sit on the tiles prob with out the need for glueing down if it get dirty you can take it out side in the summer and jet wash it and put back but the cost will not be that cheap but a good fix that will last

Seriously though, cost effective is what we're going for.

How about a few carpet tiles with spray glue, When they get mucky throw them away, If you slip at least you get a soft landing, But if not i have used acetone to clean a tiled floor and used grey flow coat from a fibre glass roof with the non slip bits in, I think it is small ceramic shot blast media

Well they paint the tiles in Wellington with it and it seems to last a good few years before chipping off, and that's not the sort of traffic our laundry area gets! Will investigate rubber matting, and maybe try again with the idea of tape

Could you not phone/visit your council works department and ask what/who they use?
Bonus is, it'd be a local supplier.

You'd think contacting WCC would be easy but they're a complete pain to deal with, or at least have been with me every time I phone them. It seems everything is protected under confidentiality agreements here

Or failing that they claim to have no responsibility and say they've outsourced it to a contractor and hand you a phone number for them. No service. I'm a bit annoyed with them at the moment as they've decided to pull down the trolley bus wires in favour of diesel buses. It seems the weirdest choice in the world, a step backwards in eco-emissions which they claim to fight for...

I had an elderly neighbour years ago in the UK who had a sloping concrete path at the back of her house , and she was scared to walk down it in the wet .She asked me to do something about it , I said steps, she said no the gentle slope was easier for her ...so I marked out with chalk a decorative diamondy grid pattern , and with a 9 inch grinder cut grooves in the concrete ...She was delighted ...and it was very cheap to do ....win win ....
