Painting brake disc backing plate recomendations

Hi all

Am new and have many Q so this is my first of many . I have been using rustbuster epoxy mastic 121 on my 1970 vw beetle resto . Parts I have used it on are new body panels I have welded in . The lasts parts I use 121 on were my front beam and steering parts .

I have a set of new disc brakes and I want to paint the dust backing plate. At the moment its had the crap thin layer they spray on form new , my question is can I use my epoxy 121 them after I have bear metaled them or should I use htp ?

yeah should be fine ..mines done with jotun which is similar and some gloss on top

I thought as much but checking on what others have done is always a good thing ..

I media blast mine then couple of coats of epoxy them 2k topcoat

I have no media blaster so for me it's grinder with wire brush and epoxy 121 only as I not 2k setup ..what else could I top coat with apart from 2k ?

doesnt really need to be a special high temp paint , think mine are done with aldi metal paint

Ok good for me base coat will be epoxy 121 followed by what I have on the self lol , think I got a few cans of metal protekt by plastikote

I brush painted some suspension parts with 2k gloss on top of sprayed epoxy and they came out ok and no airfed needed due to no paint mist.

Never even new you could brush paint on 2k gloss

I'm no expert but keen to learn as I've used the 121 a fair bit. My question is do you really need to bare metal them before putting it on? I've found that it takes a couple of days to harden but once it does it is pretty impenetrable. I generally put it on top of electrox or similar and brush it carefully.

if you dont bare metal it you wont get any claimed benefits from whatever you choose , the adhesion and rust prevention will be from whats touching the metal

that said if its a good elec coating from the factory you can key it and go on top

Well the part that I want to paint with epoxy 121 has factory paint on but it is a dust over coat and as good measure I was going to strip it off . I have been so used to stripping back to bare metal on my 1970's beetle chassis parts treating rust etc then blast over with epoxy 121 it's all I know ..

x2 for bare metal. Even more important on outer panels.

I love bare metal as with my 1970 beetle it had had almost been bare metaled on all the chassis steering parts.
