Bought a set of alloy wheels for my old 4x4 they are in very good condition no corrosion but silver and I want them black. Talk me through spraying them I don't need perfection just black that will last a year or two. Rattle can only .
If no damage needing fixed its just a case of keying the existing paint, with 400 grit wet and dry paper. Make sure they are degreased completely, I washed mine in TFR then a wipe down with cellulose thinners or panel wipe / tack cloth when dry. A few coats of etch primer, I used about 4 light coats then 4 coats of colour then a further 4 coats of clear lacquer. This is a set of Fiat wheels i did a few weeks back. Turned out pretty well.
From my experience, it's all in the prep. Mine came out quite well but I went a bit too heavy on the lacquer on one so I'd say take your time and several lights coats. Standing the cans in hot water for a few minutes can help it flow.
