Hi fella's;
I have been refurbishing / repairing my Subframe here and have almost completed it, now for painting.
I have covered this subject in other forums and maybe this one but here goes.
As this has been a long job to avoid the new metal rusting I have been patch spraying with U-POL Acid Etch and where U POL Weld Through between welded plates. I was about to crack on on weld on the bottom skid plates but thought, hang on, I have only primed in there with U-POL Acid Etch what about a top coat or further treatment, it will be inside the subframe but exposed to water, what should I paint in there??
For the rest of the Subframe I am on a tight budget and now need help deciding how to finish it off and protect it.
Due to costs I think I am going to have to opt for basic protection, my two options are:
Opt 1. Hand scrape last remnants of under seal / paint and remove any U-POL Primer, treat with Rust Convertor where required (Already have 4 Ltrs of good stuff), prime with Epoxy Primer and Top Coat with U-POL Stone Chip Grey, applied smooth with normal Spray Gun and thinned will celly thinners (not sure what ration 10%?). Poss need another Top Coat? and then Waxoyl.
Pros - Already have Rust Convertor and Loads of Epoxy Primer and Thinners, just need Stone Chip and Celly Thinners (£30.00) remaining Stone Chip and Thinners will be used elsewhere as well no wastage.
Cons - Not sure how effective Epoxy Primer will be in areas where I cannot get back to bare metal i.e small amounts of paint remain, same problem on the underside of the Mini?
or
Op 2. Hand scrape last remnants of under seal / paint then apply POR 15 three stage treatment (Marine Clean / Metal Prep / POR 15 paint). Poss need a Top Coat and then Waxoyl.
Pros - Good treatment (or so I have read), will paint direct on rust (and old paint (I think)).
Cons - Additional Cost £45.00 + Postage and any left overs I have no use for (unless I remove the Front Subframe (Not planned at current).
I had been advised to get it Acid Dipped and Galvanised as no amount of abrasive cleaning will remove all of the rust? However I have contacted a local firm, who use a National Company, they told me if its got any paint or rust on it they won't take it (I thought that's what the Acid Dip was for?).
Shot blasting is probably available locally probably going to cost £40 - 50?
Materials and Tools in my possession.
I have got 5 Litres of JOTUN Jotmastic 87 Epoxy Primer for the Mini Under Body.
50 Ltr 2.5HP Compressor / Air Lines and Water Trap.
What looks like a basic 1Ltr Suction Fed Spray gun Needle Size N/K.
1 Ltr Red Oxide :-)
Me
Goal would be to have it looking like this yes I'd like it Gloss Grey, the Mini will be Almond Green as will the underbody?
