Painting a roller shutter

My garage has a black roller shutter door "Her idea"
It is I assume plastic coated
I need to paint the inside white to help with light
I have a spray gun ect
What primer would you advise
I need to paint this next week as the wife is on holiday
Being asthmatic the fumes would do her in

They can be powder coated or plastic coated. Either way the problem you will have is that no matter how careful you are some of the white paint from the inside will leach out and show on the outside, unless you are planning on painting it all.

As for a primer, be careful using something with a strong solvent as it could react with the plastic coating and lift it!

As reply above says, bleed through to the outside should not be underestimated. And then when you repaint the outside, it bleeds through to the inside. So you repaint the inside and it bleeds through to the outside, etc. Eventually, when all the gaps are filled with paint, making the door inoperable, the bleed through will stop.

What about white emulsion mixed with about 25% PVA to make it stick, applied by brush?

Alternatively, can you find an old overhead projector screen of the roller-blind design and fix it in front of the door?

What about this as an alternative to painting, self adhesive white vinyl. Should give you some nice light reflection.

At the moment it's buy 2 get one free, see also the note about blackout adhesive, not sure if that means the film is slightly translucent

Our lass pestered me to paint the roller shut door on the workshop. I refused, because of the reasons above.

My suggestion is to hang a sheet or even better a fire blanket on the inside. It will keep a bit of heat in as well.

i would brush paint with white hammerite mate, used it on the inside of our workshop roller shutter, no bleed through to outside and easy to apply, gave the plastic coating a quick scuff with 240 grit just to key the surface.

Hi, Give it a wipe over with a rag dampened with petrol/white spirit/brake cleaner to remove the oily residue from the machines operations. Then spray it the desired colour with an aerosol. That way you don't load to much paint on and get the bleed through and you don't need much to brighten it up.

Theres no easy way...its going to mark the outside as it rolls up no matter how long you let it dry. Measure the slats and get yourself some new ones to the colour of your choice,take roll off and after taking the old ones out just slide the new ones in from the side and put the roll back (needs 2 men) Ime going to do mine because i foolishly got brown wood grain both sides years ago and regretted it ever since as it sucks up the light too.

There is a paint for plastic called bdec and no primmer needed. You can paint plastic gutters and doors with it. Great adhesion. Shouldn't bleed through if you brush or roller it.

the profile of the lats stops that ? - they're made to stop water getting through ?

I've painted a couple, by hand, slopping the paint on thick and there's never been any bleed through?

I must admit I've only painted one on the big shed, its about 5 x 4 m - rolled it green on outside sprayed white on inside. Not a trace of paint came through.

But that's an industrial door, maybe domestic roll curtains are different?

(edit) And I've never seen rain water come through it either.

I fitted brushstrip to the sides and top, made a massive difference, two fire blankets hung infront stops it acting as a heat soak, both in summer and winter

The link I gave, was the cheapest I could find Snoop. Loads of sizes, lenghts, styles etc. Just knocks on.
