paint supplier

Always looking at expanding my metal fab business Bean Metalworks, i have been given the opportunity to become a quality paint supplier. selling paint through bean Metalworks, the sort of paint farmers would be interested in like barn paints and machinery paints all at a very reasonable cost. i just wanted to see if there would be much interest out there???? or do you lot use people like mole valley for example for your paints. i used to use places like that my self until realized how much i could save buy using differnt supplier and the paint quality i would say it better.
I know this bit of random question but i know your lot like to say what you think so wanna here you opinions?

If I were a farmer, or otherwise interested in buying these sorts of paints, but not that often, and in your catchment area, why would I come to you? Why would I think of coming to you in the first place? Agricultural engineers and fabricators aren't the first thing which comes to mind when buying paint. Advertising could sort that.

Could be

Price.

Convenience. People often ask about paint when they come to you or you visit them.

You stock extra quality paint or special purpose paint hard to find elsewhere.

Expertise. You give advice on the right sort of paint, preparation, primers and how to do it.

What's it going to cost to expand into this area and what if it all goes pear shaped and the paint doesn't sell? If the answers are not much and not much, why not give it a go?

I've looked at this sort of stuff, we looked at becoming a distributor for Air Products, a paint and engineering chemicals supplier, and a couple of other things.

My advice, don't bother. Margins are pathetic, take up too much of your time when you can be earning more money doing other things, you need to be at your property 100% of the time, no nipping out to do a job, deal with mithering customers, plus you have to hold minimum stocks which you have to pay (almost) up front for. They offer training in their products, but don't pay you for the time.

Stick to what you know and grow your business that way imo.

If i need paint i ring a paint supplier; they will have what i need and be cheaper.

As you can see from his join date and post count, he's clearly not just joined the forum to advertise.

I'm with Paul though, start diversifying too much and you'll end up having to pay another wage which will pretty much eat way any profit you may make.
You're probably familiar with Devizes Steel supplies, just look at the sort of stuff they sell and how big their shop is but there's also someone manning the counter permanently, fortunately in their case it's usually his wife.
Stick with what you know and try to grow your business steadily rather than go balls out and fall on your ****.

thanks for advice, agree with most of it, and im not just on here to advertise that y i was asking not just tell you that i sell paint by from me. anyway would have said hole point in this forum is to help people in the trade.

the company that makes paints approached me there will be no massive out lay on my part. pallet at a time i would say. also you mention if you want paint you go to a paint supplier?? well that's what i would be,and wouldn't say paint suppliers around here would be cheaper far from it.

just got way up pros and cons, one big point is the time it takes up.

I would say that if there's a good reason why a farmer would go to BeanMetalWorks for paint when they're in Mole Valley at least once a week, then you've got a good selling point.

Interestingly enough my local Agricultural Supplies place is an agent for Dacrylate paints and I have bought synthetic enamel from them from time to time for machinery. I do know they sell quite a bit of it too, it certainly works round my way, so if it's not going to set you back an arm and a leg for stock I'd say give it a go.
