Paint sprayers

I’ve been watching a few videos about modernising furniture, where they are painting with those electric sprayers. My question is, could this be done with regular spray guns? Devilbiss, etc.

I don’t see why not, but it then occurred to me that I might not get proper atomisation with water based paints. Or am I overthinking it?

I have some strong, but old and dated 70’s “brown” furniture that would be lovely in some modern colours. I just don’t feel the need to go buy an electric sprayer.

Devilbiss say suitable for water based paints in there instruction manuals. Not sure if there’s any difference between water based automotive and other water based paints. You may need to check the viscosity is suitable and adjust if necessary.

We recently used an airless gun a Makita clone.
It did a pretty good job repainting a fan belonging one of those

I don't really know how you call those machines...
Anyways, the airless did the job a lot faster and with minimal paint loss/dispersion compared to regular aerograph...
I can't judge really the finish cause we didn't prep the surface for painting, no sanding no thinner cleaning just used a pressure washer to clean it up, there was old paint flaking on it, rust, dust, fumes residues from welding.
What's sure it worked and left a consistent layer of paint.
I would give the thing a go honestly maybe better test the thing on a sacrifial part prior to actually paint something else.

Not answering the question directly but I've got a cheap parkside cordless battery spray gun from lidl's centre isle that is more for painting fences and stuff but for me explicitly to paint furniture etc its a lot less faff than getting the compressor airline fed to a real paint gun, its self contained, no air hose umbillical and its a lot easier to clean because absolutely everything that gets paint on it is plastic and can go in the ultrasonic cleaner. And last time it was spraying glitter infused paint so that's a really good thing.
My wife also loves it, since she likes a bit of sparkle, doesnt have to rope me in to setup or do it, I can just get the gun out, put on a (ryobi on adapter) battery and hand it her then dunk the bits straight in the ultrasonic when she returns it after a quick wash under the tap. She's done various bits of the garden furniture and her spa surround, a load of furniture that looked like some horrid brown monstrosity beforehand and all sorts of other bits n bobs.
Never tried it on anything I wanted a really fine finish on, but I got automotive paint guns for that side, and I'm not handing them to anyone to spray glitter infused water based paint and return them slightly dirty, thats for sure.

An air fed gun will spray anything an airless will and usually better.
But you need to be sure that the gun has stainless steel internals otherwise it will rust.

I would say a air fed will do anything a cheaper airless will-the higher end airless will put through a lot thicker paints than a airfed but probably not relevant to what the op wants it to do in fairness
