what to use?

a mixture of galvanised/painted and bare metal on a tractor cab that's had some parts of the floor and wings replaced with galv/mild steel (bits of old car bonnet/oil drum lid!)

doesn't have to be a perfect finish but not sure on using primer on the galv but also the already painted parts, would it react? does it really need all took back down to the metal??

i would use epoxy , you can prime over old paint but then you wont have any benefits that would come with it , if its sound and no flaking /peeling then chances are will be no bother

The answer to your question is Epoxy primer. Either Jotun if it isn't on show or Lechler 29107 if it counts as "bodywork".

is there any good options in aerosol? do have a paint gun if needed (need to check it still works) but cans might be better...

Brush painting or a roller would be a better and cheaper option.
Both the Jotun and the Lechler (or any other epoxy) can be brush or roller applied.
Might take a few coats to get full thickness but either will give far better protection than an aerosol.
The Lechler will go on better (smoother) but you can thin the Jotun to work well.
The Lechler can be bought in smaller quantities which might be a consideration for you.

Don't forget the prep - a good clean, sanding then panel wipe will keep any paint stuck on for longer.

Novol do a 1k aerosol epoxy that's okay for small areas.

International also do a 2k epoxy aerosol but not see it on sale. Had some through work but one issue is once you activate it the clock is ticking.
