Paint finish

Anyone have any advice regards matching paint finish, I have a couple of repairs to do on my daily and it is quite heavy in orange peel as std and any painting I have done has always been better, how do you adjust style or settings to intentionally get peel, does maybe adding no thinners to the clear help at all. Will have a practice on some scrap panels but could do with a few pointers before hand if possible. Thanks

Well I've never heard of anyone wanting to do a worse job to Match the existing bad quality paint, thicker paint will do the job combined with wrong pressure at the gun

turn the pressure down on gun and dont thin the paint as much

id just do my normal job on it then tickle any ajoining panels with some fine wet n dry and polish over it all

you can try lower pressure , less thinners or what id probably try is put the first coat dry so its rough looking , let it flash off more than normal then go for a wet coat and hopefully the peel will show through a bit

only problem I see is put it on dry and it becomes rough not a peel like texture, its a bit of an odd one this as ive never known anyone want to create a bad finish, usually the opposite

yeah i think it makes more sense to do a nice job then tickle the ajoining panels to match

or depending on the size of the job clear coat the whole side if possible

Actually it's quite common with top line body shops to match the effect of the original paint. Many brand new cars come with a fine orange peal effect when you look closely. If you made it totally flat it would stick out from the rest of the car.

I remember a few years ago being round a guru's paint shop who specialised in high end repairs of prestige motors. He actually did a lot of paint jobs on brand new cars which got damage in transit from the manufacturers and his job was to ensure the customer never knew that the car had been painted as it was brand new. He showed me a new BMW with a very slight orange peel and was telling me how he would match it.

I was really referring to people doing their own cars, they usually want to get the best finish possible

It's a Japanese car and I know paint is known to be thin so don't want to flat and polish anywhere else as I only intend to paint the front wing in clear, it's only a fine orange peel but not as flat as when I painted my mini, I also like to make things difficult for myself for some reason, I also like to learn as much as I can about a subject I am doing and research as much as I can, I don't always get the results I am after but it's not for a lack of trying. I do however learn from my mistakes and try to do better next time, it's all part of the fun of a hobby. Probably be totally different if I did it for a living. Some people think I am mad for this but anyone similar minded understands. The internet and forums with YouTube make Hobbies so much better than they used to be. Thanks again
