paint effect

Hello chaps,anyone got an idea how this paint effect can be done (the table not the bonnet)

I have a project in mind for this effect
I'm looking to do it from scratch not as he has by making the table from the bonnet if you get what i mean

its just built up with different base coats then flatted and feathered back with 800 wet and cleared. It has to be done with solid colour direct gloss ro avoid ghosting in the feathered edges. Not a novice job.

There's two ways this is done. Most common way is to rub through the paint in patches with say P400. The other way is to get a skilled artist to airbrush the design.

That table IS the bonnet. I've seen those pics somewhere online before.

The "correct" way to get a nice patina is to leave it in a desert for 30+ yrs. But that bonnet looks like it's been cut back with wet&dry as above. Table has been clear coated to seal it all in. I like it a lot, apart from the castors on the legs, they look odd.

there is a look on the hotrod scene in the US where they find old patinaed trucks and just shoot clear over them.
Its been done on Gas Monkey before.

It you want this from scratch you'll need to build up the layers of paint different colours and different ticknesses. Then rub away the layers in places to create the patina. You'll need to spray salt water over the bare areas if you want rusty patches. Once you are happy with the effect you clear coat.

Not for me personally but most people get it wrong !!! if your gonna rub it through you need to do the areas that naturally wear so it looks a little bit realistic !!!

And that's why I say its not for novices. As my learned friend suggests, get it wrong and it looks like someone just got too heavy with the 1200

If you want rust calcium chloride in solution form is even better than salt water....but you would need to wash it well to nutralise otherwise you will have just crumbs left a few years down the road. Arther

I've had a play doing a patina and I'd say a polishing mop will be the best way to get it right also bare metal rust then prime over the top works quite well
