Paint colour code for classic car

Evening all.
My mate has just acquired a bond minicar which due to a small accident while tucking it away in his garage, needs a bit of bodywork painting.
I don't think it has a paint colour code on it anywhere and I think it's had a respray at some point in the past and not the original colour.
Any ideas how he can get a rattle can made up with the correct paint or has he got to buy half a dozen cans with a similar colour and test each one?

take it to a paint supplier and they can match it of there colour cards

or a car paint supplier can scan the paint, easier if there is a panel, petrol cap etc. that comes off, I had to take the whole bonnet of my 1929 Dodge to get it scanned, they can then mix up a custom rattle can, and they are sooooooo much better than Halfords rattle cans................
