I have just become the proud owner of an oxford 110 arc welder, what are the benifits of the two OCV settings? 50V and 80V which is the best setting for welding a Land Rover chassis?

its down to the choise of rods. the rods will have a specified OCV. what landy you got i'm on with a full overhall on a lightweight

not used it yet but have got a box of Murex E6013 2.5s.
and have just noticed on the box it says OCV 50V doh!
can you explain what the two ocv values are for?
I'm trying to repair a 110 (pre defender) that;s seen plenty of neglect.

different types of rods need different voltages as does different positions. why i don;t know but they do! would be worth looking through the tutorial and practising on some scrap first (and i don't meen the landy!) for inspiration see this thread http://www.mig-welding.co.uk/forum/showthread.php?t=26965

OCV relates to "droop" or how the voltage drops under load.
Say you run a a rod with a an arc length that gives 21V at abut 80A. The higher OCV will have dropped more so you have more headroom if the arc becomes unstable.
Now start doing positional, vertical up You need to whip the rod to keep the weld pool from sagging and dripping. The higher OCV will not lower the current as much and actually increase the heat as you increase the arc length. So whipping does not help much.
At the lower OCV, the current will drop more and the heat is less during the whip.
Thin metal works better with a higher OCV. That is because you tend to run the rods at at the lowest current in their usable range. At low currents, the arc is much more effected by current blow, slag covering pool etc. The higher OCV keeps the arc stable.
There are rods designed for lower OCV welders like the 7018-AC vs a regular 7018.
Rods like the 6010 have a real nasty arc, it will blow itself out on a low OCV.
Generally, the lower OCV is used on general purpose rods (6013's). Try it on either though to see which feels better for your application.
