Ths owl has ruined my day.
I had a peek at it this morning, and all day it has been on my mind. it reminds me of something, cant remember what, film? book? not sure; to me a good book can be like a film a while later.
Something nasty? think so, maybe Lecterish. There is a quote about it that I cant remember something about 'shimmering and menacing'.
The posture looks like something out of a proper horror film, Christopher Lee about to do vile things to the nubile virgin(ooh stop it).
Definitely scary stuff.
I suppose it works as a sculpture then.
The mounting is excellent, that can so often completely ruin a piece of art; a nice thing stuck on a stick does my head in.

Harry Potter perhaps? I had to sit through one of the Harry potter films 3 weeks ago and that wizard guy reads a book from the back of an owl with open wings, thats what inspired me for this one. Not exactly the same cos whoever made that one was a clever fellow as its wings open and close... now theres a project.. loads of head scratching for that one me thinks... maybe one day
keep meaning to ask you... were are you from? love to pop by and visit sometime. Every now and then I buy tools from down south and usually go and pick them up so could swing by the next time

tell you what.. it works.We have crows nesting outside the building and every morning when we come in there are twigs at the door below where they been building. When it was outside rusting for 3 days not a single twig until I removed it and sure enough they were back. Thats what im putting it down to anyway... got to be

Do you coat it with something after you've rusted it, or do you leave it just rusty? Would be great to see a pic of it out doors!

This is what im researching at the moment. Had loads of good advice on here about finishes. I have a few test pieces on the go at the moment as i dont wanna ruin the colour. I been trying varnishes, waxoil and a few other products. To be honest whatever I use it would have to be done a few times every year. Seems to me if someone could invent a real good clear lacquer for steel they would be worth a fortune

I have been using a satin finish yacht varnish outside and it has been great, wash it with a scrubbing brush gently to remove any loose rust flakes, leave it to dry and varnish it twice, use a stiff brush and work it in. After a year it looked fine a year later I cleaned it and gave another coat to restore the finish.
Looks better than paint, easy to apply and seems hard wearing.
