Overhead weld problems

Hi All.

I worked away pacticing in my little shed doing some fair welding, I made a bracket in the shape of the rusted crossmember on my car I need, and the welds were fair for a beginner, BUT, on the car, outside and overhead my welder is going like a bl**dy machine gun! I got some bits to stick pretty good but none of it looks good until I grind it down. It is as if I had no gas, but it's a new bottle and I can hear the bottle open when I screw the regulator at it's last turn.
Could this be the wind? It's not really very windy but the tree's are shaking about. I have a large section of canvas and if I surround the car with it I could maybe shield it, would this help? Sorry to be so long winded (Excuse the windy pun) but please help with advice, I have till Tuesday to fix this for it's MOT.

almost any breeze is enough... shielding may well help

shield it, and what ever amps you using to get a nice fillet in down hand drop off maybe five amps pay attention to keep your arc length a few mm or so lead angle maybe 85 degrees, if you keep it clean you will get a better result mate, even if you brush it good with a wire brush, turn your gas regulator up a bit if you want

I surrounded the car with large canvas sheets that nearly ended up over the car park nearby! Eventually got the welds to stick but because of the wind and little experience, got a bit 'blobby' which I ground down and re-welded over. It didn't look too pretty at first but it is strong and tidy looking now.
I'll need to get some practice in and I do need better gas supply. I'm checking three sources, Ebay dealer, Gasman and Adams. Mainly because of the high wind I went through three bottles of disposables although I don't know whether they are all completely empty or not yet.
