Oven cleaning ?

I'm restoring this old enamel gas oven and I usually use Mr Muscle foam oven cleaner to take all the gunge off but this one has black baked on hard carbon gunge on it that nothing will remove. Anyone know what professional oven cleaners use on this or how to get it off without ruining the enamel?

Yes they have a value when restored, I've sold a few to camper van'ers who like the vintage look.

Caustic/Sodium hydroxide at 10-20% by weight is what we used in kitchen. It will shift the carbon long before it does any damage to enamel. You can buy it pre mixed in poundland/wilko.

Dont leave it soaking for weeks as it will eventually dissolve glass (making sodium sillicate).

Always wear goggles and gloves when using it.

I cleaned all the oven bits in one I recently mechaniced on, oven had 20 year old baked on crap on it.
I used Oven Pride from tesco.
Oven all looked like new when put back together.

25yrs ago I had one in a boat and one in a wagon that had a bmc ingine, can’t remember what the wagon was……….

Get a dishwasher tablet, a few drops of water. Use as a gentle but effective scourer. Abrasive enough to get rid of the dirt but not so much as to damage the enamel.

Use gloves though. I think it’s dangerous stuff.

If you do use this stuff, put the water in the bucket first. If you put the caustic soda in first I find it goes lumpy and a bit hard. Be careful with it, don't splash it about.
