Outside rubbish storage

We've had a problem with rats recently inside our house. We've had peat control due to the urgency of it. They are still going to our black bag rubbish. I've traps and bait ect out. I'm thinking of making a 1000mmx1000mm bag storage area. It would have a lift up lid. Only problem I can see is won't be easy to get broken bags ect at the bottom. 1 what thickness metal? 2 I know it should also have front opening but then there are gaps to the little @#_@s to get in. Also the metal bins you can buy seem thin.

Get on Free Cycle for a large dead chest preferably or a big upright freezer with the lid still on it They make great feed store containers and will also be good for bin bags so long as up don't over fill them

if it's gonna be a perm thing...
make a frame with 25x 2mm box tube.....weld the corners and with with heavy pop rivets attach 0.5 galv sheet.....
this will also do for the roof....galv or st/steel hinges also pop rivited will be ok....
PROVIDED its on a conc or paved floor.....that way the little B's cant dig in undernearth....

we used junk chest freezers for storage......worked for us......

worth a laugh, have a look at U tube for rat traps.....quite entertaing.....
I tried a couple, that didn't work.....
was reduced to poison I'm afraid.....

If you can find the nesting area a terrier team are the best way of sorting them out.
Any food must be kept so they cant get too it and they will move on if nothing to eat

Cant beat the commercial wheely bins, vermin, pet and storm proof. 1100L steel bin with a lid and four uplifts a month for about £100 a month. They sort/pick through the recycling .

Rats are everywhere, we have them here, and I shoot them when I have time. I dont like using poison in case a predator, carrion diner, or one of the pets eats them. They seem to learn traps pretty quickly and avoid them.

We use metal dustbins with weighted lids. Also got one full of grass seed, which mice love, but they have not got in.

the lids arent squirrel proof 6 of em at a school i do work for all with 4 inch holes in. the little gits jump out on you if u didnt notice them going in

You could try the tried & tested way,
Flour, coco and a ground up fried to a crisp slice of any bacon you have handy , get it made up then add the same amount of Plaster of Paris to the mix , mix it well put it down dry a foot inside a 100 mm or so dia horizontal weighted tube , feed the tube till it stops being taken . The science behind it is that the ingested POP mixture takes moisture from their body and effectively dehydrates them to death very quickly .
Site th pipe along side a wall or hedge row as rats use these as paths , if you make a LONG 3 inch square U channel even better as they like to have two or three surfaces against their body as often as possible . They not being able to vomit will take a full tum back to their nest and then die , should one of the carrion eaters find it there will not be enough of it left in powder form in their guts to cause problems .

The made up mix also stores well in a decent screw top airtight jar too.

Mine is parked next to the woods, never seen squirrels trying to eat their way into our bin in the twenty odd years we have used them, I have never seen a hole in the lids of others either

I've made a largeish bin store with adjustable feet to keep the thing off the ground & wet.
It has two compartments (a smaller one for black bags, the larger 66% one for blue bags & cardboard).
Small angle frame and Zintec galv sheet panels for sides & top lid.
The top is sloped like coal bunker to stop rainwater ingress (though the lid has an overlap as well) and to make the front lower and easier to reach & access inside.
(ATM I've only got roof batten timber slats in the raised bottom as I've had no vermin issues, but I could easily add some weldmesh to creature-proof if needs arise).
(No pics, cos my rear garden is a tip atm lol. With my campervan build and so much going on, it's a junk pile & not aesthetically pleasing!)
