Outdoor MIG welding

Its a nice day and not much wind (for scotland)

I am putting up a steel chimney and to make things easier i'd like to weld a few parts in place.


Any tips on using a MIG outside as the welder i have don't do gasless welding. Would just winding up the flow on the shielding gas work or is there any other tricks you can do.

Don,t try to stop the wind, try and deflect it. If you put up a barrier to the wind it will be forever blowing down. Try to use two piece of say plywood to deflect it round you. Also you could use a gloved hand near to help shield.

Stand close to it, using your body to shield it from any wind, a helper holding a tarp or something is normally helpful too if it gets up. Otherwise just use your hand to shield it, and turn your gas flow up a bit


Not ideal, but should be do-able.

You will find, that the weather is calm, as soon as you pull the trigger on the welder, there will be a sudden gale.
