Oscillating tool sharpener

Friend of mine told me about these drill based sharpeners (sharkeners!) for oscillating tool blades.

As it happens I tend to keep the old blades so would be very handy if it actually works.

Anyone tried these sharpeners...if so did it do the job...and which one did you try?

would have to match the pitch of the saw are they all the same ? i wouldnt of thought so

I think maybe it just grinds in a new set of teeth into any blade. This is the used/dead blade box...they're used for rough jobs.

i just sharpen mine with a 1.0mm slitting disk in the angle grinder, they dont have to be accurate and cost nothing can sharpen them about 4 times

I think this sharpener is basically a stack of slit discs bolted together with spacers.

Actually...for the same £40 (or cheaper) I can probably just bolt my own slit disc stack together and make my own with a bunch of 1mm spacing washers.

The teeth on a multitool blade are triangulae in plan. How does a multiple stack of disks produce this shape?

Unless you constantly dress each disk in the stack to a point (ignoring how you do this with any symmetry/regularity of spacing), you will end up with a sharpend blade with square teeth (so it looks like the screw on a bench vice, not the screw on an M12 bolt).

You could make a mini version to assure yourself of the concept. Take an M6 roofing bolt and alternate M6 washers and M6 mudguard washers. Clamp up with a nut and spin in a cordless drill. Apply to a piece of soft wood and see what shape it cuts.

Seen a few people try them out, but always seems like they are pretty useless and a bit of a gimmick.
Might give you some long teeth for a bit of cutting through soft wood, but much else forget it.

Once you have ground away the hardened teeth on the blade you just have a piece of soft steel which isn't going to last very long.
I’d suggest it would be better to dress the existing teeth with a small file, or braze a small piece of hacksaw blade on.

I guess to avoid this you could dress the edges of the cutting discs to get the correct form but it wouldnt last long

ive "re-sharpened" using a thin disc before ok for soft wood or plasterboard but doesnt last long before needs to be done again

The teeth on a multitool blade are triangulae in plan.

This is just for the rough work blades I'm thinking. I'm going to put making something at the bottom of the (long) future project list....that way I can continue to justify the keeping of all my used blades
